Fostering with Pets: Requirements and Guidelines

Pets are a wonderful part of many families. Having a pet does not disqualify you from fostering — in fact, they can often be a source of comfort for children.

Fostering with pets: The basics

Having pets is generally positive for foster children, offering emotional support, companionship, and teaching responsibility. Fostering agencies will simply want to make sure your pets are safe and that your home remains hygienic.

The Pet Assessment

During the Form F assessment, your social worker will look at:

  • Temperament — Is your pet calm, friendly, and used to children?
  • Hygiene — Are food bowls, litter trays, and bedding kept clean and away from children's spaces?
  • Exercise and Care — How do you manage your pet's needs alongside caring for a child?

Banned breeds and safety limits

Any dog breed banned under UK law is an automatic disqualification. Additionally, agencies will evaluate the number of pets you own; having too many animals can sometimes raise concerns about household management and hygiene.
